BLOG: “You May Not Love What You Think” (James K.A. Smith)
A simple, introduction to Smith’s primary thesis (which is more fully put forth in his book — see below). In this blog, Smith argues that we are shaped by our affections, and that we might not actually love what we think we love.
PAMPHLET: “Creating a Rule of Life” (Michael Jarrett)
For years both individuals and communities have attempted to develop a “rule of life”, which is nothing more than a thoughtful vision for how you will live your life before God and others. In this resource, Michael Jarrett walks through questions and categories you would look at to create a rule of life, and provides practical examples.
VIDEO: “2 Corinthians 3:15-18: How Can I Change?” (John Piper)
In this episode of Look at the Book, John Piper walks through 2 Corinthians 3.15-18 to see how Christians are changed. There are some wonderful truths in this short video.
BOOK: You Are What You Love (James K.A. Smith)
This book presents a compelling argument that we are not primarily “thinking-things”, but beings who are shaped by our loves and affections. Smith rightly reorients Christian discipleship (and the habits of the Christian life) around the idea of “heart curation”, not just gaining information. It is a worthwhile read to understand how habits and liturgies shape our affections, and how our affections shape who we are.
