For the past several years, God has lead our church to a place of deep longing to see revival and renewal in our people and our city. Yet, even our best efforts cannot ultimately satisfy our deepest longings. We cannot know when God will move. But there is one thing we can know for sure — when the people of God choose to humble themselves, turn from their sins, pray and seek God, he will move (2 Chronicles 7:14). Even though we may not be able to choose when God will bring about renewal in our church or our city, we can stand in confidence that when we, as the people of God, lay our hands to the plow in fasting and prayer, he longs to meet us there!
Having confidence in this, we chose to focus this year’s Season of Fasting specifically on the renewal pattern of God shown throughout scripture - to turn our eyes to the many ways God has moved within his saints before, knowing he will do it again.
As we begin this season of prayer and fasting, we wanted to provide a resource to help include your children in this important spiritual discipline. As we engage in prayer and fasting as a church body, the next 21 days offer you intentional time to live out Deuteronomy 6 where you “diligently teach” these truths and practices to your children.
This little booklet contains seven catechism questions and answers, along with memory verses, prayers, and short Scripture readings to help your entire family engage in this season. Each is designed to be repeated three times, completing the 21 days.
For many of us, the idea of fasting is just that, an idea. It falls on the list of good things that we should do, but often feels out of reach as a duty to be performed by the spiritual elite. However, fasting, like the gospel, isn’t for the self-sufficient and those who feel they have it all together. It’s for the poor in spirit. It’s for those who mourn; for the meek; for those who hunger and thirst for righteousness. Fasting is for those who see themselves desperate for the face of God. In other words, fasting is for Christians and is part of our apprenticeship to Jesus.
Whether you are new to fasting, or desire to engage this season in new and deeper ways, download our Guide to Fasting for help. This short, five-chapter guide is a great resource to learn more about why and how to fast."
