God has given us a name.  Sin entered our world as an un-naming and mis-naming force, but God, through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, has made a way for us to be re-named. Sin has stripped our name from us. We have renounced our name. We have embraced the identities that others have given to us through other names.

Despite the proliferation of names we live under, strive for, attempt to duck,  the truth of creation is this: only God can truly name us. Our name, our “identity” is neither a quest for self-actualization nor a reward for personal achievement — but the gift of God’s redemption in Christ.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. What would you say is the most important thing for your existence and well-being?
  2. Why do you think so many of us are obsessed with personality tests? Where can these tools be helpful for us as a church? Why is self-discovery necessary and what are the potential dangers of our obsession with it?
  3. To connect identity with our sermon from last week, how do your liturgies make a name for you (ie. how do your habits shape the way you see yourself)?
  4. Philosophy answers the core question: Who am I? Psychology answers the core question: Do I matter? How does Christianity offer a unique answer to both questions?
  5. What is your name? Where have you been content to let other people “name” you? Where have you experienced suffering as a consequence of being mis-named?
  6. In what significant ways has this mis-naming affected how you feel, think, desire, choose, and behave?
  7. Where is God inviting you to be renamed? What would surrender actually be like for you?
  8. Why must we continually go back to the question of, “who am I?” How does the work of Christ and the reality of his Kingdom shape your answer?
  9. If “I know who I am” is the front line of our engagement with the world, how does this reshape the ways you are currently in the world, but not of it?
